Interview: Iolanda Mansi, General Manager at Caruso, a Belmond Hotel, Ravello

erched on a clifftop overlooking the Amalfi Coast, Belmond Caruso is much more than a luxury hotel - it’s an immersive experience where history, breathtaking views, and genuine hospitality all come together.
At the heartbeat of this unique sanctuary is Iolanda Mansi, the General Manager and a Ravello native. Iolanda is a passionate and empathetic leader of hospitality. She has a degree in Communication Sciences and advanced studies from Harvard and Cornell. Iolanda joined Belmond in 2007 and rose through the ranks to become General Manager of Belmond Caruso.
Proud mother of Alfonso, Iolanda enjoys travel and gastronomy. She champions teamwork, believing the hotel’s success comes from the genuine human connections. When asked about her secret to success, she simply smiles – because the answer lies in that smile.
In this interview, Iolanda offers an insider’s perspective on what makes Belmond Caruso truly exceptional – from its stunning location and architectural marvels to its vibrant team and the culinary delights – while encouraging guests to discover the soul of the Amalfi Coast.
How would you describe Belmond Caruso in three words?
The Caruso experience can be captured in three powerful words: Dream, Team, and Passion. More than just a place, Caruso is an immersive world shaped by these guiding principles.
Dream: From the moment you step into our beautiful, frescoed lobby to the breathtaking sunsets on our terraces, a sense of wonder captures you. We are dedicated to transforming dreams into reality.
Team: The Caruso is brought to life by dedicated people – a cohesive team work together to elevate the experience for every single guest. Our team is the driving force behind our shared dream, our objectives and achievements.
Passion: We pour our hearts into every detail, going above and beyond to ensure the guests’ complete satisfaction. For us, this is not just a job – it is a commitment to creating unforgettable moments and exceeding our guests’ expectations.
What sets Belmond Caruso apart from other luxury hotels on the Amalfi Coast?
I believe that our hilltop location in Ravello, suspended between the sea and the sky, is what truly sets us apart. Reaching Ravello is a conscious choice – a deliberate journey brings you to a place of unparalleled beauty.
Perched 365 meters above sea level, Ravello is a hidden gem, an intimate sanctuary which is revealed after a winding ascent that provides breathtaking panoramic views. Unlike other towns on the Amalfi Coast complete with theirbustling thoroughfares, Ravello – and by extension, the Caruso – is a destination in itself.
This creates an atmosphere of serene seclusion, perfect for experiencing the Amalfi Coast in a more personal, tranquil, and inspiring way. We embody the philosophy of “creative leisure” – ozio creativo in Italian – that Ravello is renowned for, encouraging you to connect with yourself, with nature, and with your own sense of inspiration.
How does the hotel incorporate the stunning Amalfi Coast surroundings into its guest offerings and atmosphere?
The spirit of the Amalfi Coast permeates every aspect of the Caruso – the interplay of sea and mountain – height and shore, depths and peaks.
This is reminiscent of a siren’s allure and is celebrated throughout our hotel – from the architecture to the gastronomy. Our Executive Chef, Armando Aristarco, expresses it through his dishes, while Bar Manager Tommaso Mansi captures it in his vibrant cocktails. Together, they embody the sentiment of a beloved local saying: “The inhabitant of the Amalfi Coast has one foot in the boat and the other in the vineyard.”
Is there a particular spot within Belmond Caruso that holds special meaning for you?
For me, the Pool at Caruso holds a special significance – it marked the beginning of my journey here at the property. This year, it has truly evolved into something extraordinary – a unique, stand-alone gem and the most exclusive pool club on the Amalfi Coast.
It is a place that fosters inner peace, embodying the very essence of the creative leisure I mentioned earlier. It transcends fun, glamour, and luxury: the pool is an arrow pointing toward the heavens and the sea, symbolising ascension and elevation – everything this place means to me, and to us.

Is there a signature dish or drink at Belmond Caruso that every guest should try?
If you asked me for one signature dish, I would choose “Nu Burdell” – and I’m sure Chef Armando would agree. It’s a medley of cooked and raw fish, a true culinary adventure that, as the Chef says, is “like diving off the coast of Amalfi or Capri”.
From the initial burst of flavours and textures, a harmonious order emerges – a reflection of his creative universe: chaos transformed into cosmos.
And for a cocktail? Tommaso’s masterpiece: the Gimlet. It’s a liquid poem dedicated to the Amalfi Coast’s famed sfusato lemon – a tribute to this unique local variety.
Come to Caruso, take a seat at our fine dining Ristorante Belvedere, and order Nu Burdell to begin your journey through the depths of the coast. Or head to the bar, and watch Tommaso work his magic – crafting a taste of the Amalfi Coast just for you!

Are there any hidden gems or local experiences around Ravello or the Amalfi Coast you would personally recommend?
The Amalfi Coast is a treasure chest overflowing with wonders. I suggest exploring the coastline by sea, on a boat trip: the perspective is truly transformative. The towns clinging to the clifftops appear as theatrical stages for local life. Also, I would balance a boat trip with an inland adventure, wandering through lemon groves on the ‘formichelle’ path, exploring chestnut forests, and discovering hidden vineyards.
And Ravello? Every corner has provided inspiration for some of the greats of literature and music, and served as a backdrop for iconic movies. Think of Villa Rufolo, the extraordinary Ravello Festival, its enchanting Mediterranean gardens, Wagner, and Gore Vidal, enjoying an aperitif in the main square at sunset before a concert.
Quite simply, this place is purely magical.
Can you tell me about your journey to becoming the GM of Belmond Caruso?
My journey has been fuelled by a lifelong passion for hospitality and a genuine love for people. But it’s also a story of fortunate encounters – beginning with the General Managers who came before me. They planted a seed in me, nurtured it, and helped it take root and blossom.
I owe them a deep debt of gratitude for teaching me how to care for this passion, and to truly listen to my inner voice.
It’s been an incredibly fulfilling path – a dream come true – made possible by the grace of my family, my colleagues, and all those who supported me along the way.

How do you inspire and motivate your team to provide exceptional service consistently?
More than just motivating the team, I see my role as keeping a constant flame alive. There are times when that fire might flicker – whether due to personal or professional challenges. That’s when I step in to rekindle the spark, to remind everyone of our shared goal, that is to end each day with two smiles – our own, and our guests’.
What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned from working in luxury hospitality?
If I had to sum it up in one word, it would be time. We are privileged to serve a discerning clientele – people who have access to almost everything in life except one thing: time.
We are entrusted with their most precious gift – their free moments, their respite from the demands of work and life. Luxury hospitality has taught me that time is the ultimate luxury for those who seemingly have it all.
That’s why we must handle it with the utmost care, ensuring we not only meet but exceed their expectations, while fully understanding the trust they place in us.

How do you see luxury travel evolving in the next 5 to 10 years?
I believe the hospitality industry will become increasingly competitive. The growing demand, heightened expectations, and the understanding that life is made of moments to be savoured will drive the market towards ever-higher standards. We must be ready and prepared to meet these challenges.
Looking at the Amalfi Coast, I believe and hope that a more sustainable and mindful approach to tourism will develop. I think it would be the most beneficial path for our future. Indeed, our region, with its unique geography and delicate beauty, requires careful protection and a measured approach to sharing its wonders.
