Afternoon Tea at Marlfield House, Ireland

    Marlfield House, Ireland

arlfield House Hotel is a 4-star luxury country house located just outside Gorey, Co. Wexford, 1 hour's drive from Dublin. The house is set on 40 acres of lush gardens, grounds and woodland walks.

Marlfield House first opened as a hotel over 40 years ago and is a member of the Relais & Chateaux luxury hotel group and Ireland’s Blue Book.

The hotel’s Manor House is beautiful with lots of character. When you enter the hotel, the reception area is warm and welcoming, with a fireplace and a comfortable seating area.

Marlfield’s reputation was built on fine food, much of which is grown in the garden and the surrounding area. Fresh herbs, vegetables and fruits, which are gathered daily, grow abundantly in the hotels gardens. The Duck offers an informal restaurant with casual dining, or you can opt for a more formal experience in The Conservatory Restaurant.

    The Duck

The Duck Restaurant is in the restored courtyard buildings, which includes a coach house, a potting shed and a garden tool shed.

The Cellars at Marlfield offer an extensive list of wines from all over the world.

We enjoyed afternoon tea in the Conservatory Restaurant. This can also be served in the Drawing Room, or when weather permits, outdoors on the Terrace.

Our afternoon tea was beautifully presented. It consisted of three plated tiers: sandwiches, scones and sweet treats. There were also a wide range of black teas, fruit teas and herbal teas from around the world available to us, as well as the option of coffee.

The sandwich tier consisted of four sandwiches per person, including free-range egg & chive salad, glazed loin of ham & tomato chutney, smoked salmon on homemade soda bread and brie & red onion tart.

The homemade scones were served with butter, cream and berry jam.

The sweet treats included opera gateau, lemon meringue choux, summer berry tart, and a rhubarb & custard trifle.

Afternoon tea is served Wednesday through Sunday. It was very reasonably priced, particularly when comparing to Dublin hotels:

❖  Country House Afternoon Tea €39

    ❖ With a Glass of Spumante €52

    ❖  With a Glass of Champagne €59

All the food was delicious and very fresh. The staff were amazing, and the service was fantastic throughout.

The hotel’s Manor House consists of 19 luxurious bedrooms, which are each uniquely decorated with rich fabrics and elegant furnishings, and have marble bathrooms.

Although we didn’t stay overnight in the hotel, we were kindly given the opportunity to view the hotel’s Master Suite, The Print Room. The Print Room is in the Manor House itself, just beyond the lobby area. It is a very spacious room, beautifully decorated with stippled turquoise walls and quirky interiors. It has a seating area with a gas fireplace, a dining area and a marble bathroom.

Marlfield’s five Pond Suites were launched in 2021. The suites, which overlook the hotel’s pond, have large open plan interiors, with patio doors onto a private terrace. Each of the suites has their own distinctive character. The eclectic interiors with bespoke furnishings are both plush and luxurious.

The Lodge, which has been recently renovated, is a contemporary two-bedroom self-catering cottage, with an open plan Miele kitchen, a lounge and a dining area.

We had a really enjoyable afternoon in Marlfield House. The house and grounds were stunning, and the interiors were beautiful throughout.
