Interview: Michael Brennan, Managing Director, Killarney Hotels Collection

Michael Brennan is the Managing Director of the Killarney Hotels Collection, the Kerry-based group behind The Europe Hotel & Resort, The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens and Ard na Sidhe Country House. Having spent more than 25 years shaping the guest experience in Killarney, he brings deep industry knowledge and a strong sense of place to his role.

Michael’s career was rooted in hospitality from an early age. He was raised around hotels and was strongly influenced by his father’s long career in Irish hospitality. He studied at Cathal Brugha Street before gaining international experience in England, Philadelphia, Toronto, Paris, the Côte d’Azur and Switzerland. When he returned to Ireland, he initially rejoined the Doyle Hotel Group before taking on his current leadership role in the Killarney Hotels Collection.

In this interview, Michael shares the story of his journey into hospitality. He gives an insight into how he balances leadership across the three hotels, and explains why he believes the sense of calm, connection, and wonder guests feel, long after leaving Killarney, are the most meaningful measures of both his and the group’s success.

What first drew you to hospitality, and what continues to inspire you as you lead one of Ireland’s most iconic resorts?

Some of my earliest memories are of being in hotels. My late father opened the original InterContinental Hotel in Dublin in the early 1960s and later went on to run the Doyle Hotel for many years. My brother John and I were incredibly fortunate to be included in our parents’ work and to spend so much time around hotels growing up. It is probably no surprise that we both eventually found our way into the industry.

What continues to inspire me is the constant opportunity for change and improvement. I genuinely enjoy evolving our hotels and enhancing the guest experience. Wherever I go, I am always observing and learning. Inspiration can come from something very small – it doesn’t have to be a grand idea to make a meaningful difference. It is those thoughtful improvements that elevate the guest experience, and that is what matters most to me.

What does “Irish hospitality” mean to you in today’s global luxury landscape?

Irish hospitality in today’s global luxury landscape evokes a blend of authenticity and warmth. Unlike some luxury experiences that focus on lavishness and flamboyance, Irish hospitality is rooted in personal connection, storytelling, and genuine care – qualities that resonate strongly with travellers seeking meaningful experiences rather than mere status symbols. At The Europe, many of our team members have been with us for over 30 years, embodying this tradition of lasting relationships. Our ‘Céad Míle Fáilte’ – a thousand Irish welcomes – is a signature of the resort, offering a level of warmth and continuity that is increasingly rare in today’s world of luxury travel.

If you were to describe The Europe Hotel & Resort in just three words, what would they be – and why?

    Timeless, Welcoming and Inspiring.

The resort blends classic Irish elegance with modern luxury, where the team’s warmth and personal attention make every guest feel genuinely cared for. We are nestled within 26,000 acres of national parkland, with views of Killarney’s largest lake and Ireland’s highest mountain range. The resort offers not just comfort but also a sense of wonder and connection to Ireland’s natural beauty, culture and heritage.

What makes this property truly unique, not just for guests, but for you personally?

It may sound like a cliché, but what truly makes this property unique is the people – our guests, our shareholders, and, most importantly, our team. It’s hard to believe that I am nearly 25 years with Killarney Hotels, especially when many of my colleagues have been here even longer. That kind of longevity says a lot about the place. While our shareholders have entrusted us with an incredible asset, it’s the people working here who give it heart and bring it to life every day. Each and every team member does an outstanding job caring for our guests, and I am very lucky to play a small part in it.

How does the natural beauty of Killarney influence the atmosphere and identity of the hotel?

The sweeping views of the lakes and mountains create a sense of calm that perfectly complements the hotel’s relaxed luxury. Guests feel fully immersed in nature while enjoying world-class comfort, embodying the resort’s tagline, “Luxury Relaxed.” The natural beauty of Killarney’s lakes and mountains is truly at the heart of The Europe Hotel & Resort. When people hear “The Europe,” they immediately think of those breathtaking views.

We’re fortunate to be surrounded by 26,000 acres of national parkland, which influences everything we do. When we built ESPA, it was designed into the ground so that it wouldn’t interrupt the landscape, and every relaxation space was carefully positioned to allow guests to unwind while taking in the views. The same attention extends to our dining spaces — whether outdoors on the terrace or indoors, guests can enjoy the spectacle of the lakes and mountains with every meal.

Even our interiors and design are inspired by the outdoors: panoramic rooms frame the scenery like living art, while the materials, textures, and colour palettes draw on the natural surroundings to bring the beauty of Killarney inside. Every corner of The Europe is designed to celebrate the landscape, creating an atmosphere where guests feel connected, inspired, and completely at ease.

The Europe Hotel & Resort has seen significant investment year after year – can you share some of the recent enhancements, and how you approach evolving the property while preserving the character guests have come to know and love?

We are very fortunate to work with a family ownership that is deeply committed to continually reinvesting in the property. Our goal is always the same: to enhance the overall guest experience while maintaining the unique character of the property. In recent years, this has included the introduction of 80 Premier Lakeview Guestrooms, the addition of the Hans Liebherr Suite, and a full renovation of our Lobby and Reception area. Each of these developments has been carefully designed to elevate comfort and luxury while staying true to the hotel’s identity.

Looking ahead, our ambition is to continue modernising the property in a thoughtful way, while always being mindful of our stunning location and the natural beauty that surrounds us. Preserving that sense of place is just as important to us as delivering exceptional standards for our guests.

When guests check out, what feeling or memory do you hope stays with them long after they’ve left Killarney?

When guests check out of The Europe Hotel & Resort, we hope they leave with more than just memories – we hope they leave with a feeling of calm, connection, and wonder that stays with them long after they’ve left Killarney. A stay with us isn’t just a visit; it’s an experience that stays with you forever, inspiring you, comforting you and calling you back to the beauty and magic of Killarney time and time again.

The Europe Hotel & Resort holds a special place in the hearts of many returning guests – what do you believe is the secret behind its enduring appeal across generations?

The Europe Hotel & Resort holds a special place in the hearts of many returning guests because it offers something rare – luxury that feels personal and effortless. Beyond the stunning views of Killarney’s lakes and mountains and the world-class amenities, it’s the people, traditions and attention to detail that keep guests coming back.

Many team members have been with the hotel for decades, creating relationships that feel genuine and familiar. Families come back year after year, often across generations, because the hotel feels like home.

As Managing Director of Killarney Hotels Collection – The Europe, The Dunloe, and Ard na Sidhe – how do you balance overseeing multiple properties while ensuring each one delivers a unique and memorable guest experience?

Balancing multiple properties while protecting what makes each one special comes down to clarity, culture and consistency. At The Europe Hotel & Resort, The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens, and Ard na Sidhe Country House, the goal is not to make them operate the same – it’s to make them equally exceptional in different ways. Each property has its own identity, guest profile, and sense of place, and that individuality is something to actively protect. It starts with defining a clear vision for each hotel: The Europe is about contemporary luxury and world-class views; The Dunloe leans into family, activity, and natural space; while Ard na Sidhe is intimate, romantic, and rooted in heritage. When those identities are clearly understood by the team, decision-making becomes more consistent and aligned.

The second piece is people. Strong, empowered leadership teams in each property are essential. You build trust in your General Managers and Department Heads, giving them the autonomy to bring their hotel’s personality to life while holding them to shared standards of excellence. Across all three properties, there is a shared commitment to service, warmth, attention to detail, and genuine care for the guest. How that service feels may differ slightly in each hotel, but the underlying standard never changes.

Communication is also critical. Regular check-ins, cross-property collaboration, and sharing best practices help raise the bar across the group without diluting individuality. Staying close to the guest experience is non-negotiable – that means spending time on the ground, listening to feedback, and experiencing each hotel as a guest would. It’s the only way to ensure the vision translates into reality. Our aim is to create a strong, unified culture while allowing each property the freedom to express its own character. That is what turns a collection of hotels into a portfolio of distinct, memorable experiences.

What advice would you give someone starting out in hospitality today?

Starting out in hospitality today is both exciting and demanding – and with the right mindset, it will take you far. Say yes to opportunities. These are the moments that get you noticed and accelerate your growth. Whether it’s covering a shift, learning a new role, or helping out where needed, stepping up matters.

Be curious and keep learning. Our profession is evolving fast – food trends, sustainability, technology, and global influences are constantly shaping how we work. The more you stay open and adaptable, the stronger you’ll become.

Attitude beats experience. Bring positive energy, a willingness to learn, and a strong team spirit. Hospitality is a team sport, and being someone others enjoy working with is one of the most valuable qualities you can have.

Master the basics first. Whether you are front of house or back of house, the fundamentals matter. Every role contributes to the bigger picture, and consistency in the basics builds excellence over time.

Most importantly, remember that hospitality is a rewarding, lifelong career. Every day is different. There will be challenges, but even more rewarding moments. You have the opportunity to create magical, memorable experiences for your guests. Enjoy the journey.
